Theresa Butler is the owner & principal designer of Theresa Butler Interiors. Theresa’s passion for interior design stems from her desire to design spaces that are a reflection of her client’s personality and lifestyle. She finds joy in discovering what makes clients happy and bringing it to life through their homes.
A native Nashvillian, with an MS in nurse anesthesia, interior design has been Theresa’s calling since she was 12 years old, and the pandemic ignited her desire to change careers and get back to spending more of her time doing what she loves – interior design!
We had the opportunity to chat a bit with Theresa about her practice and her passion for interior design.
What’s a recent client project that you absolutely loved designing? What about it made you excited?
A recent project the TBI team tackled was a vibrant and eclectic boys’ bedroom. Our clients embraced bold colors and wanted wallpaper throughout the space. Adding to the excitement, our 13-year-old client is passionate about jazz music and Legos. We were thrilled to blend these interests with a splash of vivid colors!

What’s your words of wisdom for others who are interested in becoming an interior designer?
There are people out there that will love your perspective. You don’t have to be like everyone else. Stay true to your design aesthetic. That’s what makes you special.
What are your best design tips for new DIYers?
Take your time and be patient with yourself; mistakes are inevitable and part of the process. Be proud of yourself for starting!

What are your best design tips for someone who has moved into a brand new space? How should they go about starting to think through the design?
The first tip I’d offer is to live in the space for a while. Pay attention to how it makes you feel and evaluate what you need for both the main area and the adjoining rooms. Then, create a plan that includes your color palette, necessary furniture, and personal touches. Incorporate items you’ve collected and pieces that hold personal significance to you.
What makes Otto Studio’s products stand out and why do you like to use them?
Otto Studio’s wallpaper is like none other. There is a seamless marriage between the unique patterns and bold colors of Otto Studio’s wallpaper and my interior design style.
How do you use wallpaper on accent walls and in unexpected places?
I love using wallpaper in unexpected places like the ceiling, often referred to as the “5th wall,” and inside closets. These areas create that surprising “wow” factor, as they’re the least expected but deliver a powerful impact.
Please shed light behind your creative inspiration and how you come up with new ideas.
Inspiration can strike me from a variety of sources at the moment. It might come from a beautiful paint swatch or a stunning bouquet of flowers. Recently, I was inspired by a magazine publication with a predominant yellow theme and designed an entire room around a curated collection from that magazine.
